You could also check the carter ventilation. There should not be much pressure in the carter to have fumes/gasses come out of the oil fill cap.

If ventilation is OK, you could do a compression check to see what is the general condition of the engine: pistons, piston rings, etc. Regularly the top piston rings break/ disappear causing gasses leaking into the area below the pistons.

i think it is a broken piston ring. if this is the case how difficult is it to fix? there is only a bit of smoke but its a steady amount enough to be noticeable.

also, the smoke goes away a bit when accelerating and comes back more at idle.
